SQUARE ONE SHOPPING CENTRE – EXPANSION
Located in the heart of Mississauga, Ontario, the Square One Shopping Centre, at just over 1.2 million ft2 (111,485 m2) was in dire need of expansion, due to the ongoing success of its recorded sales.
Prior to commencing this renovation/expansion, Square One was already one of Canada’s largest and busiest shopping malls. In considering how best to add more than 320,000 ft2 (29,730 m2) of new retail space and accommodate a new Cineplex Odeon movie theatre, it was determined that a clear point of arrival and street presence were vital for the success of both the mall and the theatre.
With that in mind, the new entrance was articulated as a girdle-shaped glass rotunda set within a beautifully landscaped street adjacent to Duke of York Boulevard. With ample surface parking nearby and a new car drop-off positioned next to its lower-level entrance, the round glass architecture of the rotunda has become a beacon both day and night. Further, the rotunda’s soft shape partners well with the neighbouring round urban forms of the Living Arts Centre, Playdium and the City Hall’s council chambers across the street.
Internally, the public routes throughout this addition have benefitted from the design of the new architecture, with its bowed, sky-lit ceilings flooding the mall’s interior with natural light, resulting in a pleasant shopping experience for all.
