EQUESTRIAN HOUSE
This project involves the renovation/addition to a large, “J-shaped” 1970’s era rural house, which includes a master plan for the entire site and the complete re-design of the existing pool, including its outdoor change rooms.
The fundamental challenge with the existing house was that its main living space on the ground floor, did not directly connect to its lower level outdoor space, next to the pool. Essentially, to reach the kitchen from the poolside, one had to walk through the exercise room at the lower level and then proceed upstairs, which was a rather disconnected and impractical transition of spaces.
Programmatically, the house’s design is split into two segments: one side contains the main residential living spaces, while the other side consists of the garage and a professional medical office.
The proposed design demolishes the existing living space and lower level exercise room and replaces both with one large living space that leads from the main entrance foyer at grade to a stairway, which leads down to an open concept kitchen/living/dining space adjacent to the pool. The unusual triangular shape of the addition’s roof is abstracted from a horse’s head – a nod to the owners’ equestrian lifestyle.
The office for the homeopathic doctor is placed next to the three-car garage on the house’s south side. This area includes a stone walled tree-lined car parking area, which extends into an adjacent outdoor trellised court for the enjoyment of waiting patients.
